Why perfume bottles can be works of art

When does a bottle stop being packaging? On form, authorship, limited editions and permanence.

Why perfume bottles can be works of art

When we look at a perfume bottle we usually see packaging: a vessel made to protect and present the scent. But some bottles step outside that definition. What brings a bottle closer to a work of art?

It comes from an artist’s hand

An artwork carries the gaze of its maker. When a bottle reflects an artist’s language and style, it is no longer just a design product. Puzzle bottles come from the studio of the painter and sculptor Tahir Cengiz Yatağan; the patterns on their surfaces evolve directly from his paintings.

It can stand on its own

An artwork must be able to exist independently of its function. An ordinary bottle loses its meaning once empty. A Puzzle bottle, empty, goes on standing on your shelf as a puzzle-piece sculpture. As the artist says, instead of throwing these bottles away you can let them speak to your eye and your soul.

It is limited and recorded

An artwork does not lose its value once it has been used. The Puzzle bottle was conceived the same way: not packaging to throw away when the fragrance ends, but an object that stays in the room.

It carries an idea

An artwork says something beyond its form. The puzzle shape of the bottle carries the brand’s core thought: life is a puzzle and each of us is looking for our missing piece. Each time you see the bottle, the idea is remembered.

It belongs to a whole

Side by side, the eight Puzzle bottles form a series: the same form, eight different artworks, much as an artist works one theme across several canvases.
