The artistic world of independent perfumery

Small houses, personal visions, bold ideas. Why independent perfumery can be read as a field of art.

The artistic world of independent perfumery

Independent perfumery is the world of small houses and creators outside the big corporations. These houses are often born of the vision of one person or a small team, and they treat fragrance as a form of expression rather than a product. That is why independent perfumery lends itself so well to being read as a field of art.

A personal vision

In an independent house, fragrances are fed by their creator’s world. Puzzle Parfum was born this way: the extension into scent of the search that the painter and sculptor Tahir Cengiz Yatağan has pursued for years through painting and sculpture. Each fragrance carries the meaning the artist gives a concept in life.

Courage and freedom

Independent houses that are not aiming at the mass market can make bolder choices: unusual materials, structures that break the rules, genderless scents. Puzzle’s eight fragrances are genderless, and each defends its own character.

A crossroads of disciplines

In independent perfumery, scent often intertwines with other arts. At Puzzle, painting becomes the surface of the bottle, sculpture its form, and calligraphy the names of the perfumes. Fragrance is the shared language that brings these disciplines together.

Small scale, great care

Independent houses usually make limited quantities, which means more care for each fragrance and each object. Puzzle bottles, which live on after the fragrance, are part of that approach.

A voice from Istanbul

Puzzle is an independent niche fragrance house born in an art studio in Beyoğlu, Istanbul: an art practice nourished by Rumi’s Sufi thought, turned into scent. For Puzzle, fragrance is a journey, an inner remembering, an awakening that touches the soul.
